The forgotten Porsche
This is a short featuring the 924. the 924 was original conceptualized for vw by porsche. vw wanted a car that could get them into the mid priced sports car field so they farmed out the design to Stuttgart Porsche. When economic hardships caused vw to lose faith in the project Porsche stepped in and bought the designs back for what some sources say was close to 60 million dollars. The cars unorthadox layout with its front engined rear trans design gave the 924 near perfect weight distribution and impeccable handling. The motor was a non interference example that was designed for the car but was slated for multiple uses. One being the vw lt van and the other the audi 100. when the automotive press got wind of the 924 sharing its motor with a van they had a field day and the porsche purists that were already up in arms about the front engine layout turned away from the 924. Years later the 924 was rumored to possibly receive an inline 6 cyl from the audi lineup. It never came to fruition and the 924 was replaced in the US market with the 944. the 924 was still available as the 924s. this was a 924 with the interference 2.5 liter motor from the 944 and the held over 924 interior instead of the very sought after later dash from the 85.5 and later 944. the 924 you see here has stock exhaust with the rear box bypassed.

Porsche 924S Thrush exhaust project
87 Porsche 924S 2.5L Tried a Thrush welded muffler to see how it sounded. It was pretty good but a little too loud and raspy. I got a thrush glasspack to add in as a pre-muffler hoping that would quiet it down a bit and it just sounded terrible…even louder and really raw and ricer. Not too bad when paired with the stock muffler but that rasp is still there and kind of nasty. It has since diminished a bit after being run in. Running a Lindsey 944MAX chip, hence the 7000 rpm shift points. I don’t run it that high all the time as the stock valvetrain doesn’t keep up with it that well past ~6700-6800, but it does make useable power up there over the stock tuning, esp with an open exhaust. I don’t know where I’ll take it from here…maybe a Flowmaster 60 would sound better and I may have to pair it up with a high flow cat to block out some of the rasp and be somewhat emissions legal while still agreeing with the chip tuning. The flowmaster style baffling definitely has the potential to sound awesome on this motor…but it’s a 2.5L inline 4 cyl and makes alot of sound to quiet down. I used all stock piping with the old muffler cut off and the 2 1/4″ Thrush fitted in place. The stock pipe size is metric, ~2 1/8″. The inner tube of the resonator was actually 2″.
Porsche 924 (1978 NA) odd engine noise ???
My car started making these noises recently. Originally I thought it was due to running low octane (87) instead of 91, but I have since ruled that out. I added Octane booster and there was no difference in the noise made. It kind of sounds like an exhaust leak, but I’m not sure. One bolt was broken off connecting the exhaust manifold to the pipe running to the CAT. Could this cause an exhaust leak? Or is there something internally wrong with the engine? It is a Porsche 924-1978 Naturally Aspirated. It has the stock Audi L4 1983 cc 2.0L engine with K-Jetronic Fuel injection.
